Airshow's Economic impact a success
November 2008 Meeting

Our November 2008 guest speakers were Taryn Sicliano and Michele Goldberg from the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, of which the GCC is a member (www.valleyvisitor.com).  They informed us about their function in the Massachusetts and local travel and tourism industry.  They also explained their valuable contribution to the success of the Great New England Air Show.  Along with members of the UMass Eisenberg School of Business, the GSCVB conducted an extensive demographics survey at the Air Show and on the GNEAS webs site that will be valuable for future air shows.

Guest Speaker Tom Nalen

Subject: The Granville brothers and the Gee Bee aircraft.

During the 1930’s, the Granville brothers were one of the major forces in aircraft development.  Springfield airport (now Springfield Plaza) was their home base.  In 1975 Tom Nalen along with approximately 40 associates including industry representatives, designers and the Springfield Science Museum organized an effort  to recognize the Granville brothers accomplishments and their importance to the Springfield area.

Tom has invited two of the Granville daughters (June Granville Dakin and Norma Granville) to accompany him at our January 25th meeting, when he will speak to us regarding the Gee Bee aircraft.  June will make available copies of her book, “Farmers Take Flight”.

Along with a slide presentation, our speakers will provide a first hand account of aviation in the 1930’s.
